Noise

Noise is unwanted, disturbing to the listener and perceived differently from person to person. Its effects on human health include damage to the sense of hearing and the auditory pathways, and it causes restlessness, insomnia, irritability and impaired concentration.

In rapidly growing cities, as housing and industry develop side by side without planning, as traffic density rises, and as electrical, electronic and mechanical devices enter daily life in ever greater numbers, disturbance from noise increases, and the places where people can rest, work and simply live in peace grow fewer.

On the other hand, where respect for other people's right to rest and sensitivity to the environment are not sufficiently developed, noise from entertainment and other daily activities leads to widespread complaints and to serious physical and psychological disorders, chiefly hearing loss and sleep disturbance.

Alka Laboratories serves institutions and organisations in determining the adverse effects of environmental noise on the environment and human health, in preparing the groundwork for noise maps and noise action plans, in identifying noise control measures to reduce environmental noise, and in environmental noise management.

Alka Laboratories carries out the environmental and acoustic noise measurements set out in the legislation and prepares measurement reports, and also produces noise dispersion maps through noise dispersion modelling.
